On Macs I must go thru Apple's driver and the "hardware abstraction layer". Apple's driver only supports CD+G on drives with direct hardware support for the CD+G format. I send a request to the Apple driver and it hands me back the CDG bits (in a very confusing format btw, but CDG none the less). - to burn, you may need PatchBurn.
- You can expect to get perfect rips and burns. If you're getting glitchy graphics, could be your drive, lense, or disc, don't think "oh I can't expect perfection", because you can and you should.

- Many "Matshita" drives don't read or write (many mac laptops have them)
- Discs burned with Pioneer DVR can can be read by other computers, but not real karaoke hardware.

On Windows they get access to the naked hardware so software vendors can just write their own drivers if they want to. "Programming on the bare metal" allows them to send whatever bits they want to the disc.
It is one of my goals to get apple to help me write my own Kernel Extension (basically, a hardware driver) such that I have that level of access. For mere mortals this is out of the realm of possibility, but I'm willing to pay them for it, and luckily they're willing to take my money and give me help.
You have not heard the end of the story with "drive compatibility".
