Updates

Updates to kJams are always free, and they happen frequently. Perhaps one day if I ever get to version 2.0, that will be a paid upgrade. For now, if the automagical updater that is built into kJams fails for some reason, just go download the latest version (see below on this page) and install it manually (replacing the one that was there before). Even tho the version number shown on this page does NOT include the "r" designation, it will always, in fact, link to the very latest "r" build.

Purchasing

  • Unregistered: Free (has some limitations, see below)
  • kJams Lite: $40 (More Info)
  • kJams Pro: $110 (More Info)
  • Burning Plugin: $40 (More Info)

To purchase kJams: Download the one you want and run it, then go to the Help menu, pick "Purchase..." There is also an upgrade path from Lite to Pro.

To purchase the Burning plugin: Download and install it, do a burn test with just a couple songs to make sure it works for you. When you have verified that it works, go to Preferences->Burning and click the "Purchase" button.

To just donate to "The Cause": PayPal me.

Disclaimer

Keep in mind this is DEVELOPMENT software, NOT "Release", not "Beta", not even "Alpha", but one stage BEFORE that. (click here for an explanation) That means there ARE bugs (ie: you will likely experience "Asserts" and even crashes), and there ARE performance problems (ie: some kinds of MP3's don't play, some zip files won't unzip), and not all features are even present! You have been warned.

Limitations

The Unregistered version is limited in these ways:

Lite:

  • Can't add more than 3 songs to a any playlist (except for your library)
  • Can't rip more than the first 3 songs from a disc

Pro:

  • Can't add more than 3 singers
  • Can't add more than 2 singers to the rotation
  • Can't add more than 2 songs to a singer's "Tonight" playlist

Burning Plugin:

  • Can't burn more than 2 songs on a disc

There is no different download for the unregistered version. Just download and run, it's up to you if you want to register it.

Requirements

  • To rip and/or burn, you'll need a compatible drive. Take Note:
    • Many "Matshita" drives don't read or write (many mac laptops have them)
    • "Pioneer DVR" can read but not reliably write. Burned discs can be read by other computers, but not real karaoke hardware.
    • You can expect to get perfect rips and burns. If you're getting glitchy graphics, could be your drive, lense, or disc, don't think "oh I can't expect perfection", because you can and you should.
  • To burn with a 3rd party drive, you may need PatchBurn.
  • For kJams: Any Mac that runs OS X 10.3 or better
  • For Burning: Any Mac that runs OS X 10.4 or better
  • An internet connection (at least temporarily) to the machine on which you plan to purchase and activate a license.
  • Lots of hard drive space (give it at least a Gig, if not tens of gigs)
  • Currently you need about 800MHz or better, but my target is 500MHz

If you have AltiVec then any processor speed will do. AltiVec has been disabled due to a bug causing warble in the audio. Eventually I plan to fix this, tho with the transition to Intel this may be a moot point. (We already have working SSE2 code)

Downloads

Legal Notice: LAME is an external library that kJams may optionally link with, I did not write LAME, it is freely available elsewhere, it is NOT part of kJams, is not INCLUDED with kJams, and I am not charging for it. If you do not use LAME, kJams will function just fine (you can rip audio using iTunes). If you choose to install an MP3 encoder, you should take it upon yourself to abide by any applicable laws regarding licensing. For more info, go here. To download the source code to this installer and everything it installs, click here.

Version 1.0d43: (2.6 MB) (Universal)

Burning Plugin 1.0a11 (Universal)

Song files to try:

  • Sample Files. (Includes "Twist and Shout" and this one from Tricerasoft)
  • Scroll Test To install, just download it but don't unzip it. Then in kJams go File->Add to Library, navigate to the downloaded zip file and select it. In the interpret dialog, the first choice is correct, so just press OK.

Watch this movie to learn how to install the samples. NOTE: in the movie, there's a little part missing: near the very end, when you select the "Uncompressed" folder in the file dialog and press OK, the movie shows the files importing right away. What will happen instead is a dialog will come up asking you to interpret the names. Just pick "/R/L/T S" from the popup menu and press OK, then they will import.

Important: Get familiar with the current Known Issues.

Remote Control

If you have BlueTooth in your computer, and a BlueTooth PDA or cell phone, Go download Romeo, and pay the guy too, his software rocks. Now download and install:

The kJams Remote plugin!

Play, pause, next, previous, rewind, volume up/down, mute, change pitch, save, all from your couch (or the stage, or while seated in the audience), without being near your computer!

Other

The freedb has this disc image that you can burn to test out your freedb code, to make sure it works. Trouble is, for Mac users, this image is useless. It's in the form of a Bin/Cue file, which requires CDRWin to burn, or some command line unix knowledge. I've created a way to make this disc on your Mac!

  1. Download this Audio File
  2. Add it to your iTunes
  3. Make a playlist with only that song in it
  4. Burn your disc!
