kJams does not play any ".kar" or "midi" files. If you need to play them, you can at least have kJams manage them and launch an external player.

I recommend QMIDI for Mac or vanBasco's Karaoke Player for Windows.

-kjams will play (with video lyrics) any "kar" (or midi with lyrics) that QuickTime can play.  so if you can play it with QuickTime, then kJams will play it too.

-however, if you can play it with QMidi, that means it is "Type 0" instead of "Type 1".  to convert it to "Type 1" (so QuickTime and therefore kJams can play it), just use MidiKit.  you may need to change the file extension to ".kar".
