Updates to kJams are always free, and they happen frequently.  Perhaps one day if I ever get to version 2.0, that will be a paid upgrade.  For now, if the automagical updater that is built into kJams fails for some reason, just go download the latest version (see below on this page) and install it manually (replacing the one that was there before).  Even tho the version number shown on this page does NOT include the "r" designation, it will always, in fact, link to the very latest "r" build.
If the automagical updater that is built into kJams fails for some reason (or you're crashing during the update or on startup), it's probably due to a newly introduced bug, which is probably now FIXED in the current version.  So just go download the latest version (see above right or find the one you want [SERVER/product_downloads/ on this page)], and install it manually (replacing the one that was there before).  Hopefully from then on the auto-updater will work again.

If there's a brand new release, and you update to it, and it crashes on startup, believe me I already know about it and am working to fix it as you read this.  (However, please tell me anyway, the more people that report it, the faster I work). Meanwhile, you can easily Downgrade to the previous version. When you run the downgraded version, do NOT update until there's an even newer version available, which should happen very shortly.

Keep in mind this is DEVELOPMENT software, NOT "Release", not "Beta", not even "Alpha", but one stage BEFORE that. (click here for an explanation) That means there ARE bugs (ie: you will likely experience "Asserts" and even crashes), and there ARE performance problems (ie: some kinds of MP3's don't play, some zip files won't unzip), and not all features are even present! You have been warned.
Keep in mind that kJams 1.0.1 is currently "Beta". (click here for an explanation) That means I'm still ironing some bugs out, but it's definitely solid enough to run your shows and parties.

Limitations
kJams 2.0 is in "Development".  You have been warned.
The Unregistered version is limited in these ways:

Lite:
You should also know this:
* Can't add more than 3 songs to a any playlist (except for your library)
Telephone tech support is available on tuesday and thursday evening after 7pm
* Can't rip more than the first 3 songs from a disc
pacific time, and e-mail tech support is available usually within 1 business hour.

Pro:
Limitations
* Can't add more than 3 singers
There are some minor Tryout Limitations.
* Can't add more than 2 singers to the rotation
* Can't add more than 2 songs to a singer's "Tonight" playlist

Burning Plugin:
* Can't burn more than 2 songs on a disc

There is no different download for the unregistered version.  Just download and run, it's up to you if you want to register it.

* To rip and/or burn, you'll need a compatible drive. Take Note:
System Requirements are listed here.
** Many "Matshita" drives don't read or write (many mac laptops have them)
** "Pioneer DVR" can read but not reliably write. Burned discs can be read by other computers, but not real karaoke hardware.
** You can expect to get perfect rips and burns.  If you're getting glitchy graphics, could be your drive, lense, or disc, don't think "oh I can't expect perfection", because you can and you should.
* To burn with a 3rd party drive, you may need PatchBurn.
* For kJams: Any Mac that runs OS X 10.3 or better
* For Burning: Any Mac that runs OS X 10.4 or better
* An internet connection (at least temporarily) to the machine on which you plan to purchase and activate a license.
* The latest Stuffit Expander (kJams may launch it to unzip certain files)
* Lots of hard drive space (give it at least a Gig, if not tens of gigs)
* Currently you need about 800MHz or better, but my target is 500MHz

<strike>If you have AltiVec then any processor speed will do.</strike> AltiVec has been disabled due to a bug causing warble in the audio.  Eventually I plan to fix this, tho with the transition to Intel this may be a moot point.  (We already have working SSE2 code)

Updates

If the automagical updater that is built into kJams fails for some reason (or you're crashing during the update or on startup), it's probably due to a newly introduced bug, which is probably now FIXED in the current version. So just go download the latest version (see above right or find the one you want on this page), and install it manually (replacing the one that was there before). Hopefully from then on the auto-updater will work again.

Updates to kJams are always free, and they happen frequently. Upgrading from 1.0 to 2.0 is a paid upgrade.

If there's a brand new release, and you update to it, and it crashes on startup, believe me I already know about it and am working to fix it as you read this. (However, please tell me anyway, the more people that report it, the faster I work). Meanwhile, you can easily Downgrade to the previous version. When you run the downgraded version, do NOT update until there's an even newer version available, which should happen very shortly.

kJams 2 development builds have been opened up for public purchase. Yes, you'd be buying into early access to software still in development, which means it may be buggy, and will have features missing. Please see the kJams 2 page for info about what is working and what is not.
