In order to rip a music file to your hard drive, it needs to be converted into an audio format that your computer can read. This requires an encoder. The encoder translates the music file into the audio format of your choice: AIFF, MP3, MPEG4, QuickTime Movie, Wave, etc.
QuickTime has several encoders built in, so unless you specify otherwise, kJams automatically rips files to an AIFF Uncompressed format. This is the default. If you prefer a different audio format, you will need to change your Preferences to different encoder.
- If you want to create MP3 files, you must have the LAME encoder installed on your computer. You probably did this when you downloaded kJams. If not, download LAME now.
- If you want to create Ogg Vorbis files, you must have the XiphQT package installed on your system.

Setting Preferences
You have to tell kJams which encoder you are using, and you do this through your Preferences.
- Click on Edit → Preferences → Importing.
- Pick the Audio Encoder you want from the drop-down menu.
- Pick the Preset you want, or create a new one.
kJams ships with several presets defined for each encoder (or just one when only one really makes sense). Once you pick the encoder and preset, you never have to think about it again—unless you want to rip a different format.
