Do songs ever stutter, or does the app freeze when playing certain songs? Try these tips:

  • 32bit only: When playing Video files (ie: not "Audio+G" files)
    • if playing "high definition" files, set the resolution of the Video monitor to 720p, else set it to 480p (if you don't know what that means, ASK ME, as this is critical)
    • if the video is not encoded as h.264 (mpeg 4) then re-encode it to that (see below)
    • if the video file is 1080p, then re-encode it to 720p and try a reduced frame rate, eg 24fps. To re-encode, use Handbrake
  • 64bit only: turn off "automatically make backups of database" (advanced prefs)
  • turn off "High Quality CDG Video Upscale" (general prefs)
  • increase the "Audio buffer size" to 9 or 10 (windows only)
  • set the "Half Ring Buffer size" to 5 megs or higher
  • turn off "Pre-ache next song"
  • turn ON "delay playing until song is unpacked"
  • turn off the Server
  • reduce the number of songs
  • ensure you have 8 GB of RAM
  • ensure you have a recent computer
  • ensure antivirus background scan is turned OFF
  • ensure there is no backup going on
  • ensure "whole disk encryption" is turned OFF
  • ensure there is no bloatware running
  • ensure there are no expensive background activities going on
  • use a Mac (windows has worse performance for multi-threaded apps)
