So, you want to record your singing and mix it with the karaoke music. Excellent! Perhaps you want to upload your finished production to your website or http://www.singersshowcase.com

Recording with GarageBand
This article touches on doing basic audio effects in GarageBand (reverb is a 'must' to make your voice sound better) <br/>
Note: there's a troubleshooting section below, after the Details section

General overview / concept (quick-start)
# plug in a mic and earbuds (see below for explanation)
# Change the song to your key in kJams
# Export the on-screen lyrics and audio to a single (QT) file
# Switch to Garageband: Import the file; play on-screen lyrics / music while you...
# Record your voice on a separate track
# Play with the mix (audio effects, including reverb on the vocal track; balance the music and vocals)
# Remove video track (on-screen lyrics) so that you can export a single audio file to mp3

Details
Note: These instructions repeatedly use the term 'track header'. This is what one looks like in GarageBand:<br>

http://www.kjams.com/resources/gb_track.png

* plug a Microphone into your computer (sound in, or USB or whatever) or use your built-in iSight as a mic until you have time / funds to get a real mic
* to make your vocal track sound its best, plug in ear buds or cheap headphones (the kind that sit on top of your ears so you can still hear sounds in the room). This way, the mic doesn't pick up the music over your computer speakers, and we end up with the ideal situation of two separate tracks (music and vocals). This is critical for keeping the two tracks separate and for making your voice sound better when you mix it.
* Choose your mic. Go to System Preferences -> Sound -> Input. I like ANR off. (note: for GarageBand to get the change, you quit GarageBand then re-launch)
* Change the song to your key in kJams (you get better tonal quality if you don't have to strain to hit the notes. This is why professional singers always sing in "their key")
* Export the on-screen lyrics and audio to a single (QT) file
*# kJams Preferences -> Exporting -> Apple TV
*# File -> Export -> QuickTime
*# Quit kJams if you want to free up some RAM
* Import the file to Garageband: (New Project.) Tempo, Key, etc. don't matter. Delete the Grand Piano track (Track menu). Drag your new QT file to the GB window.
* Play on-screen lyrics and music in Garageband (space-bar starts and stops)
* Record your voice on a separate track
*# We don't want to fuss with the metronome. Turn it off in the Control menu.
*# Create a new track with the + button, lower-left corner. Real Instrument. No Effects is fine for now--you can add them AFTER recording!
*# To bring the playhead back to the start of the song, click the "beginning" button (two buttons left of the Play button)
*# The Record button is just left of that. It's show time! :-)
*# Put on the ear buds
*# You should see the karaoke on-screen lyrics in a small pane
*# Adjust your Mac system volume (on your keyboard or in the menu bar, etc.) to a low-ish level so you can hear the music in your ear buds, but can also hear yourself singing (not in the ear buds). I personally prefer this method over the Monitor feature due to the latency and echo.
*# Don't worry too much about the Recording Level -- you can adjust it after recording. Just get it "close enough". (Too low is better than too high. Red lights should only be flashing on your few loudest notes of the song)
*# Space-bar stops recording. Flub up on singing? Delete button removes your vocals. "Take 2!" (or 5 or 10 in my case.) Or you can add additional vocal tracks and keep the best one. In that case, there are two buttons in each track header to know about: Mute and Record.
* Play with the mix. You can change most of the sound without re-recording (audio effects, including reverb on the vocal track; balance the music and vocals). This is why we troubled with earbuds!
*# Be sure your vocals track is selected.
*# The effects are in the pane in the lower right. If you don't see it, hit Command-i (track info)
*# You can play with the presets, or just go straight for the Details triangle and add some Reverb. 30% is a good starting point.
*# To balance the vocals and music (independent volume levels), drag the slider in each track's header.
*# Don't worry about small background noises in your vocal track. They will be drowned out by the music track.
*# Visual EQ is the place to adjust for the tinny sound of an iSight mic. Boost the bass, cut back the other freq's.
* Export single audio file to mp3
*# Delete the Movie track (on-screen lyrics)
*# Share menu -> Export Song to Disk (If it says Export Movie, see previous step)
*# You probably want MP3.
*# If you have a file size limitation at the web site, play with the Audio Settings -> Custom -> Bit Rate until your file size is appropriate: 96 kbps sounds fine, 64 is not so good, 128 is excellent, 160 may be overkill
*# Before clicking Save, change the file name (this is to avoid a bug in GarageBand. See below for info.)

Troubleshooting
I can't see the on-screen karaoke lyrics!
* Click the Movie Track header.
* Still no video? Click the Details triangle to hide the Effects and make room for the video pane.

Export of MP3 from GarageBand goes through 2 of the 3 tasks, but no "Converting" task, and no file is exported!
* This appears to be a bug in GarageBand. In the last step before exporting, it asks for a file name and has a default name. Change it.

The iSight mic not working with GarageBand!
* Quit GarageBand
* Go to System Preferences -> Sound -> Input

GarageBand is recording my vocals OVER the music track!
* Undo (multiple levels).
* See the Little round button on the far left of each track header? It is red to indicate which track will record when you click the Record button at the bottom.

----

Recording with SoundFlower, kJams, and GarageBand
# run GarageBand
# in the GarageBand Audio Prefs:

Randyj: OMG yet another way to play a song while in target mode. I'll remember the panic that first night for a while... just passing along words of wisdom to newbies

The "Rotation" is the list of singers who will sing tonight. They are interleaved, that is, if there are two singers, A and B, and A has 4 songs and B has two songs, and A is first, the list will go A-B-A-B-A-A. A singer has control over the contents and order of their "Tonight" list. They simply fill this list and order it to suit. The KJ has control over the order of the singers via the "KJ Rotation" lists.

The "KJ Rotation" lists each singer who had declared themself "here" for the evening, and the order in which they were added, or the order the KJ has placed them in. Each singer appears once. The list shows the order of the rotation, starting with first, and listing up until last. A singer will stay in the rotation even if they don't have a song currently in their "Tonight" que. That way, they won't loose their place if they forgot to add another song by the time they sing. (You can set a pref to kick them out if they do this, forcing them to re-enter at the bottom of the rotation when they add another song, but that will likely make them sing *sooner* than they otherwise would have, so be aware). The current singer in the rotation should be hilted, and is not necessarily the one at the top. (soon, the current singer will have a speaker icon next to it, separating it from selection, so you can select freely but not interfere with the visual feedback of who is singing). Not necessarily the one at the top means, the list does not change when the singer changes, what changes is just which singer is current. If you don't touch anything, you'll see the hilight change (naa-speaker). The list only changes when singers are added or removed, or when the KJ changes the order manually. If a singer goes home or is no longer singing, the KJ can simply "delete" them from this list, it does not actually delete the singer, it merely un-checks their "Here" checkbox in the Singer list, so any songs in their "Tonight" list remain there for the next time they show up at the venue.

The "Rotation" list is different than the above, this is the one you want to show the audience. The current singer is always at the top, and the list scrolls up when that singer is finished. It also "wraps around" when it gets to the end, so singers may appear more than once (if they have more than one song in their "Tonight" cue. This list is maintained automatically for you, you really don't have much control in this view, since it depends on the contents of other lists. To change what you see in this list, you manipulate the Singers list (to change which singers are "Here"), the indvidual singer's "Tonight" list (to change the order in which a singer's songs appear) or thie "KJ Rotation" list, to change the Rotation order. Note that to change or replace the CURRENT singer you must first STOP the current song (using either the ESC key or ⌘-. [command-period])

Pushing and Pulling
This is for older users of kJams, who started prior to 1.0d45r22. Newer users need not do anything special, as you should always remain in sync.

This refers to synchronizing the kJams Database of meta info with the individual song files. Under "Advanced->Special" you'll see these new entries. Push means, take whatever metadata you see in the browser, and update the tags in the actual files on disk. Older users only: If you've edited your meta info prior to r22, then you'll want to "push" your work into the song files. Or, if you just added to library and never edited info, you want to "pull", which will pull the tags out of the song files and update the kJams database, you'll recover artist and album info this way, if it's not already there.

(You're learning the hard way.) So you go find the right song but you can't get it to play! Grrr! Take a deep breath. Just remember this: You've probably got a singer in Target_Mode. To turn it off, double-click the singer name with the red target. Now double-click your song. It plays, quick-n-dirty. But to take advantage of Pro features: first add a song to the singer, then double-click the Singer in the KJ Rotation list.
The Spooler is an integral part of kJams, and provides these benefits:

# Play direct from CD without manually ripping first
# background ripping: rips will happen in the background, not interfering with your use of kJams while it does it's work
# background encoding & zipping: these too happen in the background
# QuickTime Export, even direct from disc
# ripping will be at the full speed of your drive. That is, it won't be slowed down by the encoding process. With the spooler, ripping happens on it's own thread, which is *just* a tight loop reading from the CD, and writes into memory (a deque for those who want to know). For this "read loop", there's no audio encoding, no subchannel descrambling or error correcting, so it reads as fast as possible, making the rip itself go as fast as possible. (there is a second, separate thread that reads from the deque and writes mp3 and cdg)
# the cache: The cache stores uncompressed audio and video. If you play a song off the CD, and then decide to import it, it doesn't have to rip because it's already in the cache. Likewise, the next time you play it, it does not have to read it from the CD. If the file was just in your library, it is unpacked (decoded from MP3 or AIF or mpeg or vorbis or anything) into a canonical uncompressed format (pcm). If the file was zipped, it will also go into the cache, so next time you play it it will not have to be unzipped or unpacked.
# perfectly sample accurate playback of audio with locked-on sync to video, when you scrub the play head, even for VBR compressed audio.
# Playback of many QuickTime formats: Now that QuickTime is handling the audio files rather than CoreAudio, I get a bunch more file formats for free, including MIDI and KAR files.
# Cue a song to it's first non-silent sample, so when you un-pause the music starts instantly (Skip Silence pref)

Future benefits:
# Cue multiple songs with crossfade

You will want to have the Tasks window showing, that way you can see all the spools that are running.

You should take care to manage the spooler's audio cache, see Preferences.

(BTW, you can "right click" on newer MacBook trackpads by tapping 2 fingers at the same time on the PAD. See your System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Trackpad -> "secondary click")

To create a new singer without adding songs right away, choose New Singer from the File menu, or press the New Singer button (the plus sign with the little "user" icon next to it, at the bottom left).

Click the disclosure triangle next to the singer to reveal their 3 playlists, "Tonight", "Favorites" and "History". You can browse any playlist to find songs you want, and drag the songs you want into Tonight or Favorites, or just drag it onto the Singer icon itself (that way, you don't really need to click the disclosure triangle to reveal the playlists). Songs dropped onto the Singer will go into their Tonight list.

Alternately, you can double click the Singer, which sets that singer as the "Target". Now, when browsing any playlist (including the Library) for songs, when you find a song you want, just double click it and it will be added to that singer's Tonight list.

If you set the pitch, tempo or rating for any song under a singer, it will be permanently remembered for that singer.

If there is a singer that goes to more than one venue, you can use finder aliases to have them show up at each venue. For more info on that, see Venues.

==Why does the drive that does not work on Mac still work on Windows?==
What? Really? Do you have such a drive? Can I see it? What is its make/model? Please contact me.<br>
<br>
I have gone the extra mile and with help from Apple and a secret third party I have written a low level disc reader that has access to the drive in the same way that Windows has. Unfortunately I have discovered that it is still incompatible with Matshita drives. Matshita the most important drive to gain compatibility with, given that that is the drive manufacturer for the vast majority of mac laptops. However if you find a drive that says it should be CD+G compatible, but isn't, please let me know. (To see, just put in a disc and try to rip it with kJams, kJams will honestly inform you if it *should* work but doesn't, or it will inform you that it is in fact not compatible.)

Professional KJ's will likely use a mixing board for all their microphone and audio sweetening needs. However if you just want to use the computer as your mixer and sweetener, you can! (make sure you have a fast computer, the more audio processing your computer does, the slower it goes)

I went ahead and got a dual head wireless mic system. Try this or this. These are both VHF systems, tho I hear tell that UHF gives more professional results (more expensive, less interference), I've had good success with mine.

Here's an awesome cable, it's got XLR on one side and USB on the other, and it's pre-amped!! Wow! And another!

If your microphone setup doesn't come with a pre-amp, you'll probably want a Griffin iMic, since it has a built-in pre-amp. You get much better sound and less hiss if you use a pre-amp. It is possible to use a microphone without a pre-amp, you can just plug the mic into your microphone port, but then you'll want to amp it in software, see below.

Depending on your microphone, you may need a special adapter.

Now inside kJams->Preferences->Audio, at the bottom, pick the "Audio Input" from the list. Note: don't pick "internal microphone" as the input and "internal speakers" as the output because currently there is no feedback protection. Press OK to get out of preferences.

Then use the volume sliders to adjust the levels, top is for speakers, bottom is for microphone.

Current Limitations:<br>
* No chorus or reverb (or any other) effects<br>
* No compressor or post-amp<br>
* No facility for picking channels (eg: you may have mic 1 on left channel and mic 2 on right channel, and want them both mixed to center, or you may have your mics coming in from SoundFlower on some channel above 2)
* Only One Stereo Channel available. (you may want to have three or more mics)

The above things are coming soon. Crossing fingers.

For now, if you need these features, use GarageBand with this article as a guide to GarageBand 101. Or use Audio Hijack Pro, or use Audio Hijack (Lite) along with Line In (Direct Download), I like the extra features of the Pro version.

In Audio Hijack, hijack the microphone port or the "Line In" application, and you should start getting sound from the mic. If you do NOT have a pre-amp on your mic, you will need to add the "V4X Effect -> Double Gain" to amp up the microphone signal a bit, tho you wil get some hiss, which you can then try to minimize with a Graphic EQ effect. At that point some KJ's like to add a reverb or chorus effect, to make the vocals sound a bit more like you're in a large theater.

If you also want to sweeten the audio of the music itself, you can at the same time hijack kJams, and add whatever effects you wish.

Keep in mind that digital audio processing (as opposed to using a mixing board) will always introduce a very slight delay in the audio.

Details
Note: These instructions repeatedly use the term 'track header' when you're using GarageBand. This is what one looks like:

*# File -> Export -> QuickTime

* Quit GarageBand
* Go to System Preferences -> Sound -> Input

GarageBand is recording my vocals OVER the music track!
* Undo (multiple levels).
* See the Little round button on the far left of each track header? It is red to indicate which track will record when you click the Record button at the bottom.

Randyj: double-clicking .m4v and .3gp files; iPhone (Cellular) export consideration

Preparation
You must select the output format in the QuickTime Export Preferences pane:

http://www.kjams.com/screenshots/prefs/exporting.png

In the Lite version, simply pick the iPod preset that you want. In the Pro version, First pick the encoder you want, then under that, pick the preset you want, or create a new one. You can edit the preset by pressing the "Edit…" button. kJams ships with several presets defined for each encoder, (or just one when only one really makes sense). You can pick the encoder and preset only once if you like, and never worry about it again, until you want to export a different format. The four buttons, "New…", "Duplicate", "Rename…", and "Delete" apply to the preset files. Your presets are stored in the kJams preferences folder (currently ~/Preferences/kJams/Export/).

Caveats
* You can't do anything other than 15 frames per second.<br>
* You can't do multi-pass encoding.<br>
I'll try to fix the above two problems, but for now that's the way it is, even if you try to set these in the setting dialog, the settings will be ignored.

* AVI export is disabled: output does not seem to produce audio, also seems related to 10.4. But then if you try to then import, first it won't import until you change the ".avi" extension to ".mov", but then when you try to play you'll get the "Can't move to background thread" error. These too will be fixed by the "Helper App" thingie, eventually.
* Meta info is stored only in QuickTime .mov (QT Meta Info, Unicode) files. If you export to any other format, currently meta info is set using Xattr tagging.
* You can only export Audio+G files (ie: you can't export a song who's source is a QuickTime movie, divx file, mpeg file etc, please request that feature if you want it)

Export
You can export directly from a CD, or Audio+G Tracks from your library.<br>
Select the song(s) you want to convert to QuickTime, then go:

File->Export->QuickTime...

If there are songs already currently exporting, the new songs will go to the same folder, else you will be asked to pick a folder for the destination.

Each song will then be exported using your chosen exporter.

You can then double click the resulting files to open in QuickTime Player or iTunes, depending on which encoder you chose in the QuickTime Export Preferences pane.

Special Considerations
There is no limit to the number of songs you can export simultaneously, however your computer will probably start to get real slow if you're exporting a bunch at once. If this is an issue for you, let me know and I'll put in a pref to let the user specify the maximum number to export at once, that way you can cue up 100 songs for export, but only say 5 will actually export at a time (or however many you specify)

If you choose iPhone (Cellular) as the Movie Encoder, the resulting file will be about half the size (MB), but audio quality is greatly reduced.

To get it onto your Video iPod
# Go to Preferences->Export and (in Pro:) pick "MPEG-4" as the encoder, and (In Lite or Pro:) pick a preset that starts with "iPod".
# Select the song(s) you want to export
# File->Export->QuickTime
# Select the resulting movie(s), right click and pick "Open With->iTunes"
# Inside iTunes, locate and Get Info on the song(s)
# In the "Info" tab, type in the Artist name, Album name, and whatever else you want
# In the "Options" tab, in the "Video Kind" popup, choose "Music Video", press OK
# Drag the video to your iPod
