These instructions are for moving your music files from your internal drive to an external drive. The reason you might want to have actual music files are on an external volume is to save space on your internal drive.

Note: If you're moving from an external to a new external, just clone the external drive and that's it.

Keep in mind that the instructions below apply only to music that you have ripped from your CD collection or purchased from the built-in kJams stores. That is, it does not work for files you have Added to the Library. In other words, if you have imported pre-existing MP3+G files, this procedure will not help you. In that case, use the The Symbolic Link Trick below.

Start Here
kJams turns your computer into a karaoke jukebox, allowing you to play karaoke tunes with a full-screen lyrics—quickly and easily. kJams Lite offers all of the functionality you need to enjoy karaoke in your home; kJams Pro offers additional functionality for the professional KJ. The best part is, kJams is simple enough for the newbie and awesome enough for the fanatic karaoke diva!

But don’t take my word for it. Try it out for yourself. It’s SHAREWARE, meaning you can download and use it for free in Tryout mode.

kJams Documentation
The documentation on this website will help you navigate the kJams world. The Table of Contents shows the topics covered, allowing you to click to whatever info you need. If you are technically adept and familiar with karaoke--well,you won't read the documentation anyway, will you? Neverthless, there are links to technical material that may find useful, and I suggest you check out the forums as well.

If you’re new to karaoke or technically challenged, I recommend you read through (or at least skim) the topics in the order they're presented, as they are logically sequenced. Just click on the topic name, and the link will take you to the information. I’ve tried to keep it simple, but let me know if something is confusing.

Most sections contain links to more detailed information. Often this information is geared toward the techies and the karaoke fanatics, but not always. If you there is something you don’t understand, click on the available hyperlinks.

kJams menu options are described using this shorthand:
:Click on Edit &rarr; Preferences &rarr; Stores

This means:
#Find the Edit menu title at the top of your screen and click on it.
#From the menu that is pulled down, click on Preferences.
#In the list presented there, click on Stores.

One last thing. A name that's in quotes refers to an exact name. For example, if I say "kJams Music" folder, I mean the folder in the file system with that exact name.

Keyboard Shortcuts
Many of the kJams menu items have keyboard shortcuts, which are documented on the menus themselves. If you prefer using your keyboard, rather than your mouse, go ahead and learn these shortcuts.

For you techies, you can customize your own keyboard shortcuts here. Custom Keyboard Shortcuts

Jane g: /* ShowScreens */

During a live show, it is important to communicate with the audience. Traditionally, this has meant that a good KJ would spend a lot of time on the microphone, making announcements, announcing the lineup of the rotation, etc. While it is still important for a KJ to build rapport with the audience over the microphone, kJams allows you to do much more to get your announcements across. You can either use Messenger to scroll a message along the bottom of the screen (without obscuring the lyrics), or you can use ShowScreens to display a full-screen message.

Using Messenger and ShowScreens, there are many ways to communicate with your audience, even if they're out of earshot, on a back smoking patio (if there's a video screen out there), or sitting at the bar ignoring you but otherwise staring at the screen. Meseenger and ShowScreens allow you to better control the show and to provide a more satisfying experience to your audience.

Messenger
Messenger allows you to insert a message along the bottom of the video display. You can use Messenger to announce Last Call, drink specials, or anything you like. Messages can be displayed immediately or held for later. Note that a Messenger message appears for a few seconds and then fades. If the message is long, it will appear as a crawl. <u>davequestion: Should we specify the length? is there a limit to how long it can be?</u>

*To display a message at the bottom of the screen:
*#Select Video &rarr; Messenger Message.
*#Type your message.
*#Select Show to display the message immediately.
*#Select Later to save the message for later.
*Select Video &rarr; Display Recent Messenger Message to display a saved message.
*Select Video &rarr; Messenger Rotation to scroll the next three singers along the bottom of the screen.(This info is taken from your KJ Rotation list.)

Note<br/>
Display Recent Messenger Message shows the last message saved, not necessarily the last message displayed. You can show as many messages as you want using Video &rarr; Messenger Message &rarr; Show without overwriting a message that you have saved using Video &rarr; Messenger Message &rarr; Later.

ShowScreens
Unlike Messenger,ShowScreens take up the entire video display and they stay on the screen for as long as you want. (In other word, you have to turn off a ShowScreen.) So the deal is, there's a list of predefined ShowScreens in the Video menu for you to use. Or you can create your own ShcwScreen message on the fly.

*To display a predefined message, select Video, then select from the list of predefined messages at the bottom of the menu.
*To turn off the ShowScreen, select Video &rarr; Hide ShowScreen. Or go down to the list and deselect the ShowScreen.
*To create your own ShowScreen message:
*#Select Video &rarr; ShowScreen Message.
*#Type your message.
*#Select Show to display the message immediately.
*#Select Later to save the message.
*#Select Video &rarr; Display Recent ShowScreen Message to show a saved message.
*To display the upcoming rotation, select Video &rarr; Toggle Rotation ShowScreen. <u>davequestion: why "toggle"; I couldn't see where there was a toggle</u>

Drink Specials ShowScreen <br/>
When you select the Drink Specials ShowScreen, kJams displays this ShowScreen along with any message that you have saved using ShowScreen Message. In this way, you can provide info on the drink special. For example:

#Select Video &rarr; ShowScreen Message.
#Type in, "Margaritas--2 for 1."
#Select Later (to save the message).
#Select Video &rarr; Drink Specials.

Notice that your custom message is embedded in the predefined ShowScreen.

HOWEVER, this also means you don't want to select Drink Specials without first thinking about what message you have saved. For example, if you save the message, "Next Show Thursday Night," and then later you select Drink Specials, your saved message will appear the bottom of that ShowScreen.

To delete a saved message... <u>davequestion: I can't figure out how to erase a saved message. It seems like the only way you can use Drink Specials is to save a message, thereby overwriting what's already there.</u>

Using Producer
If you’re using Producer, you can create your own screens or modify the existing ones. The main ShowScreens you will want to be familiar with are the Message and Rotation screens, as these are the actual templates used by kJams to display screen messages and the Who's Up Next rotation screen between each song. You also may find yourself using the iJams, Tip Your Waitress, and Next Singer screens quite a bit during shows.

Note that each ShowScreen included is just a starting point for what you could envision for visual display between (or during) songs. Some are just sample pieces that you will use to build customized ShowScreens. If you want to hide some of these options that you won't be using during your show, find the actual file(s) in your user Library/Preferences/kJams/Producer Templates, and then prefix the file name with a tilde (~) to indicate that you want that ShowScreen hidden (e.g., ~Big Text.xml)

To learn how to create your own, go to the Producer/Tutorials page, then watch the videos called:

*Composing Text and Pictures, and Fading to Black
*Creating and Editing Comp Templates
*Intro and Outro, and Rotation Templates

In addition to the song meta templates (described in the Xattr page), you can also use [venu] to substitute the current venue name, or [SNGR] to substitute the current Singer.
Drink Specials ShowScreen <br/>
When you select the Drink Specials ShowScreen, kJams displays this ShowScreen along with any message that you have saved using ShowScreen Message. In this way, you can provide info on the drink special. For example:

<span style="color:blue;">why "toggle"; I couldn't see where there was a toggle</span>

<span style="color:blue;">I can't figure out how to erase a saved message. It seems like the only way you can use Drink Specials is to save a message, thereby overwriting what's already there.</span>

Additional Customization
Jane g: /* User Guide Table of Contents */

Start Here
kJams turns your computer into a karaoke jukebox, allowing you to play karaoke tunes with a full-screen lyrics—quickly and easily. kJams Lite offers all of the functionality you need to enjoy karaoke in your home; kJams Pro offers additional functionality for the professional KJ.

Intro
With kJams Pro, you can enable a web server that is built right into kJams, which allows Singers to use a web browser (even from a mobile phone) or the iJams or wtkJams application to manage their queues. Basically, it will allow singers to log in and manage their playlists. They can search the library or any of their personal lists to find songs they can then put into their Tonight list. They can also resequence their Tonight list so that the songs come in the order in which they want to sing them.

Important &rarr; Internet Explorer is not supported. If you use Windows to access kJams, you must use FireFox, Safari, or, with a little work, Chrome.

Also important: Singers added in kJams (rather than through the web interface or through an iPhone) will not have a password. In order for singers to log in via the server, they must have a password. To assign a password to a singer so he/she can log in:

#In kJams Pro, right click on the Singer.
#Select Get Info.
#Enter a password.
To enable existing singers for remote login:
#Right click on the Singer.
#Select Get Info and then enter the password.
#Go to Edit  Preferences  Sharing  Enable kJams Web Server.
#Enter a port number or keep the default (e.g., 12345).
#If you're using Safari, just browse your Bonjour sites for kJams: <Venue Name>. For example, if your venue is called Prancing Pony, then you'll look in Safari for Bookmarks Bonjour  kJams: Prancing Pony"
#If you're going to be using another browser, then:
##For Windows, you can install Bonjour for Windows.
##Or you need to find out the sharing name of your server machine (in System Preferences  Sharing, e.g., "bree.local").
##Go to a machine on your local network and enter the kJams Server url, e.g., http://kjams.com:12345 (un: dave, pw: a)

You can put this on a public IP address under some domain, and use port 80 (provided there's no other web server on that address). That way people can from home enter something like:

::http://kjams.com:12345/

and then set up their Tonight list before they even get to the venue! Isn't that spiffy?

Known Issues
*Any list (singers or songs) with more than 200 items will say "too many hits, refine your search" or something like that. (there is a secret pref you can change for this)
*A failed login (i.e., bad password) will not display an error; it will just display the login page again.
*The album selector doesn't actually do anything (yet).
*Updates made in kJams don't show up in the web UI until the playlist is refreshed. This will be addressed after 1.0.

::http://kjams.com:12345/

and then set up their Tonight list before they even get to the venue!

The Show Screen that automatically comes up between songs can be turned on/off by going to:

::Edit &rarr; Preferences &rarr; Advanced &rarr; Show Rotation at End of Song

For some, the screen comes up too late and stays too long, cutting into the next song. You can help this a lot by making sure Edit &rarr; Preferences &rarr; General &rarr; Skip Silence at Start of Song is turned OFF. If you still need more time, you can adjust when it comes up and how long it stays up. To do this, go to your secret preferences file and find these: <u>davequestion: Where is the secret preferences file?</u>

::<key>Show Rotation when less than time remaining (seconds)</key> <real>3</real>

::<key>Show Rotation Duration (seconds)</key> <real>10</real>

The first preference shows the time in seconds (counting back from the end of the song) when the Show Screen is displayed. To display the screen sooner, increase the number of seconds. For example, change the 3 to a 4.

The second preference shows the duration of the Show Screen, or the time in seconds that it will remain up. To shorten the display time, pick a lower number. For example, change the 10 to an 8.

Note that the time changes are cumulative. In the above example, the time before the next song starts is now increased by 3 seconds. You pick up 1 second by displaying the Show Screen sooner, and another 2 more seconds by displaying the screen for a shorter duration.

Jane g:

The KJ Rotation List automatically organizes your show for the evening, and it is from this List that you run the show. The KJ Rotation shows all of the singers who have declared themselves “here” for the evening. The list shows the order of the rotation, starting with the first singer. The order in which singers appear reflects the order in which they declared themselves “here,” but you can drag and drop the singers to achieve any sequence you want. Singers appear once on the list, even if they have multiple songs in their Tonight list.

To declare a singer as Here:
#Click on the Venue name.
#Check the Here box next to the singer’s name.

To start the rotation:
#Click on KJ Rotation.
#Click the Start button.

Once the rotation has started, the current singer is highlighted but is not necessarily the one at the top. Notice that the list does not change, only the singer who is “current.” If you don’t touch anything, you will see the highlight change as the singer changes. The list itself only changes when singers are added or removed, or when you change the order manually. Once all singers have performed, the highlight returns to the first singer, and the next song for that singer appears.

Note: soon the current Singer will have a speaker icon next to it, separating it from selection, so you can select freely but not interfere with the visual feedback of who is singing.

Singers stay in the rotation, even if they don't have a song currently in their Tonight list. This way, singers won't lose their place if they forget to add additional songs. You can set a preference to kick them out of the rotation if they forgot to add songs, forcing them to re-enter at the bottom of the rotation, but that will likely make them sing sooner than they otherwise would have, so be aware of this. I recommend you just leave them in the rotation. <u> davequestion: I couldn't find this preference</u>

If a singer goes home or is no longer singing, you simply delete them from the rotation. This does not delete the singer; it merely un-checks their Here status. This way, any unsung songs in their Tonight list remain there for the next time they show up at the venue.

If a singer misses a song (say he’s in the bathroom), click on the Right Arrow to move to the next singer. The bathroom singer is only temporarily bumped. When he comes back, click the Left Arrow until you find him in the rotation. Once he has finished his song, kJams knows to skip over any singers who performed during the backroom break.

What’s a Rotation? A Rotation is simply a list of singers who will sing tonight at a particular venue. In order to show up on the rotation, singers must declare themselves as “here.” (Or as KJ, you can do it for them.) Even though each singer has a Tonight playlist, having songs in the Tonight playlist will NOT automaticaly put a singer into the rotation. However, singers who add songs to their Tonight playlist will automatically go into the rotation. Also, if you add a new singer to the venue, he/she will go into the rotation for the night. kJams maintains two rotation lists: one for you, the KJ, and one that the audience sees.<br /> <br />The KJ Rotation List Temp<br />Rotation Playlist Temp

A kJams venue is a location, such as a particular karaoke bar, that has its own unique set of singers. Even though a venue usually represents a physical location, the key point here is that venues distinguish groups of singers. For example, let’s say you’re a KJ who works at one location, but the singers who show up on Tuesday night are not the same singers who show up on Friday night. (Okay, not likely. But you get the idea.) In this case, you could set up a Tuesday Night venue and a Friday Night venue. Or say you’re an amateur KJ who puts on shows in your own home, as well as at your neighbor’s house. You have two locations, but it’s the same set of singers. In this case, you really need only one venue. Got it? The idea is, when you click on a particular venue, you immediately see a list of singers who are likely to show up.

For the professional KJ, it’s not always this straightforward. Dedicated karaoke singers often show up at more than one venue. In this case, singers can be moved or aliased between venues using the Finder. For example, if Dave shows up at Venue A, and also frequents Venue B, you can make an alias for Dave in Venue A, and place it in the Venue B folder. You can rename the alias so it does not collide with someone already at Venue B. When a singer modifies their Favorites or Tonight list from the alias, it actually modifies the original, so when they go back to Venue A, all their changes show up there too.

Note &rarr; kJams Pro comes with a default venue, simply called Singers. This is useful for the single-venue user. You can rename the Singer venue to anything you like. And you can still add other venues later on without any problem.

When you go to File &rarr; Venue, you have the option to add or delete venues, plus you can see all of your existing venues. When you first install kJams Pro, the only venue listed is Singers. Each time you add a venue, it will show up on this list.

To set up a new venue:
#File &rarr; Venue &rarr; New Venue
#Once the venue appears in your source list, rename it. (At this point, the venue is empty. It has no singers associated with it.)

To access a venue:
#File &rarr; Venue
#Select the name of the venue.
#The venue shows up under Source (where your playlists normally appear), along with all of the singers associated with that venue.

To delete a venue:
#File &rarr; Venue
#Select the name of the venue.
#Pay attention to the warning: deleting a venue deletes the singers associated with that venue. If you are sure about this, press delete.

kJams Pro has all of the features of kJams Lite, plus additional features that allow you to put a professional show, whether you’re a KJ at a karaoke club or just an enthusiast who wants to put on a great show at home.

Here’s an overview of how kJams Pro works:
*You first set up your venues, or the different locations where you host karaoke. For the professional, this could be any number of clubs, bars, restaurant. For the enthusiast, there might be only one venue (for example, your home).
*Next, you set up a list of singers who are associated with each venue. For the professional KJ, there could be an entirely different set of singers for each venue, or there might be mostly unique sets of singers with a few people who frequent more than one venue. For the home enthusiast, a single venue with a single list of singers is often adequate.
*Once you identify who the singers are, the next step is to create each singer’s playlists. There are three lists per singer: Favorites is the singer’s personal playlist comprising the songs the singer likes to perform. The Tonight list shows which of those songs the singer wants to perform tonight. The History list tracks which songs the singer has already performed. You can add songs for each singer, or singers can create their own lists by logging onto the kJams server.
*On show night, you select the venue and then indicate which singers are “here.” Singers marked as Here are automatically added to the rotation.
*You then use the Rotation list to manage the show. The Rotation shows the sequence of singers and the songs they are going to sing.

That’s it in a nutshell. But of course there’s a lot more to it. Read on.

Start Here
kJams turns your computer into a karaoke jukebox, allowing you to play karaoke tunes with a full-screen lyrics—quickly and easily. kJams Lite offers all of the functionality you need to enjoy karaoke in your home; kJams Pro offers additional functionality for the professional KJ.

Jane g:

If you have your music stored in lots of different places (and you prefer to be super organized), you might want to think about consolidating your library.

To consolidate, you must have double the hard drive space available that your library takes up. For example, if your library takes 12 GB of space, to consolidate you will temporarily need 12 free GB available. Also note you will lose all your playlists and singers when doing this. This is a temporary workaround until I write the Consolidate command, at which time you can freely consolidate without losing any information.

#Add to library all the songs you want to consolidate from different places. (Skip this step if you don't need it.) <u>davequestion: How do you know?</u>
# Select your Library playlist.
# Select File &rarr; Export &rarr; Entire Playlist: All Files, then follow the directions. If you want to match the "kJams Music" folder style, pick Heirarchic, then Artist. Export to a folder with a new name, for example "kJams Consolidated."
# Wait for the export to complete. Have coffee or something.
# Still in your Libray, select Edit &rarr; Select All, then Edit &rarr; Trash Original Files. Yes, this will move your previous library files to the trash.
# Wait for the trashing to complete.
# Quit kJams.
# In the Finder, go to your "kJams" folder (probably at /Users/<you>/Music/kJams/).
# Trash the "kJams Library" folder and the "kJams Music" folder. (Note: Do NOT trash the "kJams" folder that contains them, nor the "kJams CDs" folder.
#Move or Copy the "kJams Consolidated" folder (or whatever you named it) to its new permanent location. I suggest you put it into the "kJams" folder.
#Optional: If you exported to a folder structure that matches the "kJams Music" folder, you MAY at this point try to rename this new folder to "kJams Music."
# Run kJams. Did you skip the previous step? If so, you will have an empty library. Otherwise, kJams will now load your consolidated library automatically.
#If you did skip that step, then go to File &rarr; Add To Library, and pick kJams Consolidated, pick Tags (if a dialog asks you about it), then hit okay.
# Wait for it.
#You're done!

(Note: Do NOT trash the kJams folder that contains them, nor the "kJams CDs folder."

Start Here
kJams turns your computer into a karaoke jukebox, allowing you to play karaoke tunes with a full-screen lyrics—quickly and easily. kJams Lite offers all of the functionality you need to enjoy karaoke in your home; kJams Pro offers additional functionality for the professional KJ.

This works best with kJams Pro (you'll get much better quality video), but it works fine with kJams Lite.

Please note: these instructions are for Mac users only.

First, export your songs to movies.
#Go to Edit &rarr; Preferences &rarr; Exporting.
#Choose a movie encoder.
#*For kJams Lite, pick Apple TV.
#*For kJams Pro:
#*#Pick QUickTime Move
#*#For Encoder Preset, pick Animation/Lossless. (Do NOT pick HD.)
#Make sure the following are turned OFF (unchecked:)
#*Pad CDG Movie Boder
#*Export .xml meta data
#*Only export short sample
#Pick a frame rate of 30 fps.
#For Export name template
##Type R - S if you want your menus to be Artist - Song.
##Type S - R if you want your menus to be Song - Artist.
#Click on OK.
#Create a new playlist and give it the same name as your DVD. For this example, we'll call it My Great DVD.
#Add all the songs to the playlist that you want on the DVD. (You can add a huge ton of movies. I don't know how many, but maybe like up to 3 hours??? )
#When you are done, select the playlist.
#Select all the songs in the playlist.
#Select File &rarr; Export &rarr; Selection as QuickTime.
#In the Choose a Folder dialog that comes up, navigate to /Users/<you>/Movies.
#*If this folder doesn’t exist, make a new folder there called kJams.
#Inside the Movies folder OR the kJams folder, make a new folder with the name of your DVD (in this case, My Great DVD... I’ll stop saying that now).
#Select that folder.

kJams will now take a very long time exporting all your songs to movies.

Note: if some of the songs are already in Movie format, make a separate playlist with just those songs. Then go to File &rarr; Export &rarr; Entire Playlist: All Files, and put them in the same folder. kJams will NOT change the names as in step 3. You will have to go to the folder afterward and make sure they have conforming names.

Next, create your iDVD project and burn.

#Run iDVD.
#Click on Create a New Project.
#At the bottom of the Create Project window, verify that the Aspect Ratio is set to Standard 4:3.
#Name the project and save it somewhere. I recommend using the same name as the DVD and saving the project to a new folder under kJams. You can call the folder something like My DVD Projects. Do NOT put this folder under the kJams Music folder.
#The process will start with a template named Revolution Main; click that text and change it to the name of your DVD.
#In the tabs on the bottom right, click Media.
#In the tabs on the top right, click Movies.
#Underneath the tabs on the right, there are two panels: the top one is the list of Media Sources, and the bottom one is the list of Media Files that are inside the source you select in the top panel.
#Under the Media Sources list, find the folder called Movies, twirl the triangle down, go into kJams, then select the folder with the name of your DVD.
#In the Media Files list, right click in the list of icons and pick Display as List. (It may already be displayed as a list.)
#Now at the top of the Media Files list, click the column header Name so that the triangle points upward (for alphabetical - ascending sorting).
#Drag the first movie into the My Great DVD window. This will serve as the background movie that plays during the menu of the disc.
#On the buttons on the bottom of the window, click the Show the DVD Map button, which looks like one square on top of two squares with little lines connecting them. (Look to the left of the Start or Stop Motion button, which looks more like "sync" button with two arrows turning into each other.)
#Now click in the media list where all your movies are (on the right).
#Select all.
#Drag the movies onto the tile on the left with the title of your DVD (the main menu).
#Click the return button.
#Save your work.
#Burn your disc.

About this feature:
*You must have a compatible drive in order to burn CDs.
*You must have the burner plug-in installed on your system. This plug-in is sold separately.
*The Tryout version of the plug-in limits you to burning 2 songs per disc. However, do not purchase the burner plug-in until AFTER you have tested a burned disc in actual karaoke hardware (not a computer). Most drives don't burn CDGs!! See the section on Compatible Drives.
*kJams burns each song with your pitch bending (shifting) intact. When you play it on real hardware, it comes out pitch bent, without instructing the playback device to do anything special.
*Currently, kJams does NOT burn tempo-shifting or sync-slipping. (Yes, it should.)
*kJams uses an actual installer program to install the plug-in. You will be able to update, upgrade or replace your kJams application without affecting the availability of the burner plug-in.
*After you install the plugin, go to Edit &rarr; Preferences &rarr; Burning to see if it installed correctly.
*WARNING: Pioneer DVR drives do NOT seem to produce viable CD+G discs. They will play in computers, but not on real hardware.
*WARNING: Due to their inconsistency in some CD/DVD players, Colored or Black CD-R's are NOT recommended.
*From a customer: I was using (cheap generic) CD-R's that I found on the web, but they would not read on Numark karaoke machines. After doing a lot of reading, it looks CD+G machines are not all as forgiving as normal computers. They recommend only music CD Maxell or Memorex. I used Maxell and use the slowest burn speed. The CD worked great on the Numark machine that I was having trouble with.
*When testing burning, use CD-RW discs, so you don't make coasters. When you've verified it is all working just great, THEN switch to using CD-R discs. Most commercial players WILL accept CD-R discs, but will NOT accept CD-RW discs.

How to Burn a CD:

Please write me directly about any troubles. Don't post on the forum.

#Make sure you have enough room in your cache drive for > 2x the size of the disc. For example, if you burn an 800 MB disc, you must have > 1.6 GB free.
#Show the Activity window (Window &rarr; Activity). You'll want to watch it.
#Make a playlist with only the songs you want to burn.
#Select that playlist.
#Adjust the pitch of each song so that it falls within your vocal range. (Tempo adjustments will not be transferred to the disc.)
#Make sure you don't have more TIME in the playlist than your media will hold. For example, if your media is spec'd at 70 minutes, don't put more than about 69.5 minutes in the playlist. See the bottom of the browser window for total minutes in the selected playlist. If you're feeling adventurous, tell me what happens if you put more time in than the media will hold. I haven't tried it myself.
If you want to keep the original format as well as convert to a new format, what you should do depends on where the song currently resides.
*For songs you have ripped (that is, they live inside the "kJams Music" folder), simply duplicate the song before you convert its format. <u>davequestion: Suggestions on location of duplicates?</u>
*For songs that you imported with Add To Library, you will first need to find out where that song lives. (Remember, when you add to the library, you aren't copying the music file.)
*#Right click on the song.
*#Select Reveal In [finder]…. This will show you where the original song lives.
*#Convert the file format in kJams, following the instructions above.
*#Then re-add the original back into kJams <u>davequestion: Do you use Add to Library for this?</u>
::This can potentially cause cache confusion, because you've created a situation where two songs have exactly the same meta info. I recommend you change some meta info on one version of the song to be slightly different from the other: name, artist or album.

Important Note Converting songs is similar to ripping in that kJams will copy the song INTO the "kJams Music" folder, and kJams will then own the song. This is in contrast to the Add to Library function, which only makes a reference to the song. (In other words, kJams does not own the song). When you convert a song that is only referenced by kJams, kJams will copy the song into your "kJams Music" folder, in the new format, leaving the original untouched.

Start Here
kJams turns your computer into a karaoke jukebox, allowing you to play karaoke tunes with a full-screen lyrics—quickly and easily. kJams Lite offers all of the functionality you need to enjoy karaoke in your home; kJams Pro offers additional functionality for the professional KJ.

Custom Keyboard Shortcuts

add screen shots

These overlays can’t be altered, but you can add your own customized messages&mdash;either as a one-shot message or a saved message that you can send over and over again. For example: “Tip your waitress!” or "Drink Specials for the next hour!"

A Launch File is a file that automatically opens outside of kJams whenever a particular song is played. For example, you may have lyrics sheets that are text documents that you want displayed when you play a song. Or you may want a photograph to come up. Or each song may have its own script that runs, doing something unique, like setting stage lighting or playing a movie in QuickTime.

Launch files are song-specific; and each song can have its own launch file.

I suggest you experiment with this. You might just come up with some great ideas. <u>davequestion: Is there any way to see that a launch file is attached to a song, or do you just have to play it to find out?</u>

Although you can enjoy karaoke without the use of a microphone, a mic most certainly completes the karaoke experience. A Diva isn’t a Diva without her microphone.

For you newbies out there, you might be thinking that connecting a microphone is easy&mdash;shouldn’t any mic work if you plug it into the microphone port? Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. You will likely need to use a pre-amp (to boost the signal), and if your microphone set-up doesn’t come with a pre-amp, you will need to purchase a mic that does or you’ll want to amp it in the software. Also, depending on your microphone, you may need an adapter.

Karaoke music often comes with background vocals that you may want to eliminate. If you ripped your music files from Multiplex discs, then vocal reduction is possible.

Under the Controls menu, there are three options available when playing a song.

::Suppress Left Channel Vocal
::Suppress Right Channel Vocal
::Suppress Center Channel Vocal

When you suppress the Left or Right channel, kJams simply takes the opposite channel and duplicates it into the suppressed channel, effectively eliminating that channel. This is useful when there are vocals only in the target channel, such as with CD+GM discs (multiplex).

When you suppress the Center channel, kJams simply subtracts one channel from the other. Presuming the Vocal was mixed directly in the center, this will do a fair job at removing the vocal. However, this is not always the case. You'll have to try it on a case-by-case basis, as some songs will sound terrible using Center Channel Suppression.

Sometimes you might want to trim the beginning and/or the end of a song . kJams lets you trim the both start and end manually, and you don’t have to be an audio expert. Here’s how to trim the intro to a song.

#First, display the Trim Start column.
##Click on any column name.
##Scroll down the list of meta data to Trim Start.
##Click on Trim Start.
#Next, start playing the song you want to trim. Trimming isn’t permanent, so it’s okay to experiment.
#When the song reaches the place where you want to trim, pause the song.
#Then select Control &rarr; Save Trim Start Time.
#The Trim Start column will show you the new start time for the song.
#*The time values are in CDDA timecode: minutes (base 60):seconds (60):frames (74).records (4). Thus, 4:35:62.2 is 4 minutes, 35 seconds, 62 frames (62/75ths of a second) and 2 records (2/4 of a frame or 2/300ths of a second). Yeah, weird, I know. <u>davequestion: should the "75ths" above be "74ths"?</u>
#*Don’t worry about understanding this. Yes, you can manually edit this time code if you want. But for most of you, it will be enough to just pause the song in the right place and set the start time.
#To change a Trim Start time, simply repeat the process, choosing a new Trim Start Time. To eliminate a Trim Start time altogether, click once on the time code. The entire code is highlighted, and all you need to do is type 0 and then hit Enter.

Trim End times are set up in exactly the same way.

Here are some things to note about trimming:

*The Trim Time carries through to all of your playlists. In other words, a song can only have one Start Trim time and one End Trim time.
*When a song has Trim values, you will see an indicator in the timeline as a red line marking the trim time. <u>davequestion: kJams Lite didn’t show this.</u>
*The Trim commands in the menus are only available for the current song. You can, however, edit the trim values directly in the browser, and you can set multiple songs at once (to the same value).
*Trimming overrides the "auto cue" preference, which tells kJams to skip the silence at the start of song.<u>davequestion: ?? Isn’t this a given? Say I trim the first 3 seconds of a song. There’s no way to do this without also trimming the silence, right?</u>

Jane g:

Playlists allow you to group songs any way you wish. Playlists are always a subset of your library&mdash;that is, all of your songs stay in your library; they aren’t “moved” to your playlists. Think of your playlists as just different ways to slice and dice your tunes. And yes, a single song can appear in as many different playlists as you want.

To create a new playlist:
#Click the New Playlist button (the plus sign in the lower left of your screen) OR use File &rarr; New Playlist.<br/>The new playlist appears to the left under Source.
#To name a playlist, select the playlist by clicking on it. Then click once more. (Do not double click.) A border will appear around the playlist title, and you can type in a new name.<u>davequestion: Is this correct?</u>
#To add a song to the playlist, drag and drop the song from the library, or use Target Mode if you are adding multiple songs to a playlist.
#To play from a playlist, simply click on the playlist and its contents appear on screen. From here, you play the songs just as you do in the main library.

Cool Things About Playlists
*Each playlist can have its own columns of meta data. For example, your playlist "Show Tunes" might have a column for Composer, while your main Library does not. <u>davequestion: why isn't the default meta data for playlists the same as the main library's?</u>

*To enable drag and drop reordering, make sure you sort your playlists by index (works in all playlists, including Rotation) <u>davequestion: what is "index"?</u>
*When you change the tempo of a song, that change is reflected in all playlists. However, this is a default setting, and kJams will allow you to maintain different tempos in different playlists. (A nice feature if you are setting up a playlist for each singer.) You can find this default option under Edit &rarr; Preferences &rarr; Advanced. When you deselect this option, any change you make in tempo will be restricted to the playlist you’re in at the time.

Target Mode
Adding multiple songs to a playlist can become tedious if you have to drag each one individually. Target Mode allows you to move multiple songs quickly.
#Double click on the “target” playlist. A little, red target symbol appears.
#Double click (rather than drag) each song title that you want to add to the playlist. The song magically appears in the playlist.
#Double click again on the playlist to exit target mode.

Note: This feature is not yet available on Windows.

The following is a tutorial for those of you who are new to karaoke or unfamiliar with iTunes. For the rest of you, just go ahead and start playing music.

The Basics
#Scroll down and select a song from your library.
#There are several ways to play the song. Go ahead and try one.
#*Click the play/pause button.
#*Double click the song title.
#*Press the space bar.
#*Control &rarr; Play
#Notice that a video window pops up, displaying the lyrics to the song.
#To pause the song, press the play/pause button or press the space bar. Press the button or space bar again to continue the song.
#First adjust the volume using the sliding volume bar (at the top left). This is the easiest way to control volume. But you can also use:<br/>Control &rarr; Volume Up<br/>Control &rarr; Volume Down
#Now adjust the tempo of the song.<br/>Control &rarr; Tempo Faster<br/>Control &rarr; Tempo Slower<br/>Control&rarr; Original Tempo
#See what happens when you change the pitch.<br/>Control &rarr; Pitch Up<br/>Control &rarr; Pitch Down<br/>Control &rarr; Original Pitch
#*Check this out &rarr; The library includes a column for Pitch. You can control the pitch from here, jumping up (or down) several levels at once. Give it a try! This is the easiest way to control pitch.
#Now stop the song by:
#*Pressing the Stop button OR
#*Pressing the ESC key OR
#*Selecting Control &rarr; Stop.

Other Controls
*To Rewind to the beginning of the song, click on the Back button (double left triangle) AFTER at least 4 seconds have elapsed in the song. (If you press Back during the first 4 seconds, you will skip to the previous song.) <u>davequestion: Rewind seems to override trim</u>
**You can also use Control &rarr; Back
**OR simply the left arrow &larr;

*To go to the Next song, press the next button (double right triangle).
**You can also use Control &rarr; Next
**OR simply the right arrow key &rarr;

*To Scrub the song, drag the diamond "playhead" across the [Screen_Shots#LCD_Panel|LCD Panel] <u>davequestion: huh?</u>

*Remember Volume You can tell kJams to remember the volume for a song. Simply set the volume to where you want it, then select Control &rarr; Remember Song Volume. Next time you play that song, the volume is adjusted automatically.
**As long as Remember Song Volume is selected (look for the checkmark), kJams will remember the last volume adjustment. If, for example, you previously set a song to 90% volume, and then you adjust it down to 85%, kJams will remember 85% the next time you play the song.
**If you want to display your volumes, click on any column name and select Volume from the list of meta data.
**To disable this feature, go to Control &rarr; Remember Song Volume and deselect this option.

*Just as with Pitch and Volume, you can display the Tempo settings for each song. This is especially helpful if you are making lots of tempo changes. To display Tempo, right click on any of the column names in the library, then find Tempo on the list and click on it. Values are displayed numerically, with 1 being the normal tempo. Tempos are increased or decreased by .05.

**You can also use Control &rarr; Back
**OR simply the left arrow &larr;

*To go to the Next song, press the next button (double right triangle).
**You can also use Control &rarr; Next
**OR simply the right arrow key &rarr;

*To Scrub the song, drag the diamond "playhead" across the [Screen_Shots#LCD_Panel|LCD Panel] <u>davequestion: huh?</u>

*Remember Volume You can tell jKams to remember the volume for a song.

|-
|Searching Temp||Searching for songs in kJams is pretty easy to figure out, but you might find some tips here.
|-
|Removing Songs Temp||It's a good idea to know how to remove a song&mdash;the right way.
|-
|Trimming Temp||Trimming allows you to skip over the beginning, or the ending, of a song. This is useful if there's a long intro or if the songs fades forever.
|-
|Slipping Temp||If your songs and graphics are out of sync, you'll need to know how to slip the graphcis. It's easy.
|-
|Vocal Reductions Temp||Some CDs have vocals isolated to a certain channel, in which case you can reduce or eliminate them. This doesn't work with all CDs, however.
